UPDATES FROM PASTOR CURTIS REGARDING COVID-19

June 5

Dear Hope Family,

It has been an incredibly painful and difficult time in our country. If you didn’t have the chance to listen yet, I hope that you will listen to the sermon from Sunday. It’s only a drop in the bucket in trying to address the reality of racism, injustice, and how God’s people can play a role in working for the good of others and for His glory but hopefully, it can be helpful to us. I also hope that your Community Group was able to have a significant time of discussion and prayer. I was personally thankful for the time that I was able to spend with my group. Let’s mourn, lament, pray, learn, and take steps right where we are to work for progress.

I wanted to give you an update on what’s going on in the life of our church together.

We Will Continue Our Livestream Only this Sunday at 9 a.m.
I hope you will join us online this Sunday and continue to try to make the most of this online tool.

The elders and staff have continued to work to make plans and changes in preparation for when we do begin to gather again. We’ve been talking with a number of churches that are meeting in the area to learn from them as well. Our elders will be meeting after the Governor announces the next set of guidelines (tentatively set for Monday) and will develop a plan for Stage 2. Please continue to pray for the elders and staff.

First Sunday Gathering via Zoom
We’ll be gathering via Zoom at 5 p.m. on Sunday. We’ll sing together and we’ll pray together. There is so much that we can mourn, lament, and pray together about right now. It is unfortunate that we aren’t able to gather in order to do this but this is the next best thing. I would love for you to plan to join us so that we bear one another’s burdens and pray.

Email Curtis for Zoom info.

Two In-person Community Groups Starting Next Week
We are going to start 2 new Community Groups that will meet in-person outside at the church facility. The other Community Groups will continue to meet via Zoom as they have been. These groups will meet with social distancing and everyone wearing masks unless a person has a medical reason not to wear one. If you are already in a Community Group and want to join an in-person group you can join it in addition to your current group or you can leave your current group for in-person one and all Community Group leaders are supportive of you doing either of those options.

You can sign up for any of our Community Groups HERE.

Help Care for the lawn this Summer
Each summer we put together a team of volunteers who help to mow the lawn, trim hedges, etc. You can wear a mask and social distance while you do this! If you would like to be a part of this team please reply to this email.

Help with a Cleaning of the Facility
Our facility is in need of a cleaning after it has had limited use over the recent weeks and we haven’t had our regular cleaners come in each week. This cleaning isn’t primarily to disinfect because there haven’t been many people in the facility but to sweep, dust, etc. We can do this over several days so you won’t have to be around other people. If you would like to help with this please reply to this email.

Drop-In Ministry
This important ministry that seeks to care for those who are struggling with homelessness is continuing in a modified form during this time. If you would like to volunteer please email John Josti.

Help Serve at Mystic Community Market
There is a new market in Medford where people can come to receive free groceries and they serve people from numerous communities in our area including Cambridge, Somerville and Medford. They are in need of volunteers to help carry bags of groceries to families as they pull into the market on weekdays from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. and to help pack bags of groceries on weekdays from 2-5 p.m. They also can use volunteers on Tuesday from 4:30-7:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.  If you are interested in serving during one of these time slots please email John Josti.

Two Questions for Everyone
We would like for everyone to click HERE and answer one of the two questions. The questions are:

  1. Do you have an immediate need? (and, if so, we would love for you to share details with us so that we can help)

  2. Can you help with an immediate need? If you filled out the form previously and your circumstances have changed please fill it out again and let us know.

Sunday Gatherings
We are currently providing a stream that we urge you to join by going to the church website. The livestream happens at 9 a.m. and then is available after that. I hope that you will plan to join us and that you will fully participate. I know that it can feel strange at first to read the Scriptures responsively, to pray and to sing when you are the only person in the room or if there are just a few others but once you push past the initial discomfort I think you will find the experience to be more meaningful to you.

Social Distancing on the stage
I wanted to let you know that although it doesn’t appear that way on the video, we do practice social distancing for all who are leading the service each week.

Children’s Ministry & Kid's Storytime Zoom Calls
HERE are some resources for families. We have also begun hosting Kid's Storytime Zoom calls on Sundays at 11:00am and Wednesdays & Fridays at 12 Noon. Email Zach for the Zoom links!

Additional Opportunity to Connect and Pray
We are continuing to provide an additional opportunity for any and all of us to connect during these days that can be isolating and overwhelming. Each weekday morning we gather online for a few minutes at 8 a.m. and we have a brief devotion and a few minutes to pray.

Morning Connection and Prayer Weekdays at 8 a.m.

Email Curtis for Zoom info.

Let Us Help You
We realize that this is a very tumultuous and difficult time that can lead to a variety of levels of anxiety and fears. Our elders would love to care for you. We would be very glad to arrange a phone call to talk and pray with you. Feel free to contact an elder directly or reply to this email.

We also know that some of you have been significantly impacted economically during this time. We would like to help meet your needs in this area and have funds available to do that. We ask that you would share your needs with us so that we can help. You can do that by speaking directly with an elder or emailing Hope.

Financial Giving
During this time, we do want to continue supporting gospel ministry here, providing for the needs of some in our congregation and also supporting our partners around the world. About ½ of the giving at Hope comes through the offerings that are received in the baskets each Sunday morning. If you would like to give online as a one-time action or in a recurring way you can do that HERE.

Care for One Another
During this time when we have limited contact with one another it is even more important to try to stay connected in other ways. We encourage you to stay connected by phone, text, email and to check in on one another this week.

Please do reach out if you have questions, if there are specific ways that I can be praying for you or if you have any need that we can try to meet.

I’m thankful for you and praying for you,

Curtis

APRIL 16, 2020

Third Sunday Gathering

Normally we have a gathering on the First Sunday of each month and we did that on the first Sunday of April. This month we are going to add an online gathering this Sunday at 5 p.m. We will join together over zoom and sing and pray together. We honestly weren’t sure how well this would work but I think that those who joined us really found the time to be enjoyable and helpful. We would love to have you join us this Sunday at 5 p.m.

Click HERE to request the Zoom link.

Planting and Yardwork at Facility
In the next couple of weeks we will likely be doing some work pulling weeds and planting flowers at the church facility. If you have time and interest, reply to this email. You’ll be able to maintain social distance while you do this.

Community Groups
Our Community Groups are continuing to meet online instead of in person. If you are not a part of a group, this is a great time to join a group. Click HERE to explore the current list of groups.

Membership Matters
If you are curious about what it means to be a member of Hope Fellowship, what we believe, how we function or where we even get the idea of church membership we invite you to join us for our next Membership Matters class that will be held online on Friday, May 1st from 6:30-9:00 p.m. In this class we talk about what we believe, how we function, what it means to be a member of the church. There is no obligation to join the church if you attend. If you are interested in attending just reply to this email.

Invite a Friend to Christianity Explored
We have offered the Christianity Explored class a number of times over the years and we are going to now try it over Zoom with the hope of reaching some who might not normally be interested in Christ but who may now be because of current circumstances. If you have a friend or family member who is not a Christian you could invite them to the course and it typically works best if you attend with them. There is still time to join this group that meets each Tuesday at 7 p.m. You can email Curtis directly or click HERE.

Here are a few details: Christianity Explored is an informal and relaxed seven-week course. It’s for anyone who wants to think about the meaning of life. You don’t need to know anything about the Bible, and you won’t be asked to pray or sing. You can ask any question you like, or you can just sit and listen. Whoever you are, whatever you’re thinking, this is a place for you to explore what life’s all about. Each session will involve a brief teaching followed by discussion.

Virtual Book Discussion
One of the ways that we can stay connected in an enjoyable way during this time is through a Hope Fellowship Virtual Book Club. You’re invited to join others from Hope to Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson, together and discuss via Zoom. If you’re interested in being part of a reading group, email Zach Barton.

Two questions for everyone - UPDATED
We would like for everyone to click on this link and answer one of the two questions. The questions are:

  1. Do you have an immediate need? (and, if so, we would love for you to share details with us so that we can help) and

  2. Can you help with an immediate need? (and then you can include details of how you are interested in helping.

We have updated the form so that you can choose areas that you are able and interested to help. Some of these ways are tentative for now based on what we believe the needs may be. This will really help us to serve one another.

Sunday Gatherings
Based on the current guidelines, we will not have our regular Sunday morning gatherings at least through May 3rd but will be providing a stream that we urge you to join by going to the homepage. This Sunday, we will be providing a live stream at 9 a.m. and then it will be available to you from then on. I hope that you will plan to join us and that you will fully participate. I know that it can feel strange at first to read the Scriptures responsively, to pray and to sing when you are the only person in the room or if there are just a few others but once you push past the initial discomfort I think you will find the experience to be more meaningful to you.

All of us have lots of friends and family who don’t normally attend church and may find themselves looking for something to do on Sunday morning and/or feeling overwhelmed by these circumstances and although you can’t invite them to join you at our facility you might consider putting out an invitation on social media or by direct invitation to others. Here is the invitation that I used on my Facebook page last week:  “Friends, if you don't normally attend church and are interested, we'd love to have you tune-in for our livestream this morning at 9 a.m. or you can watch it anytime after that….”

APRIL 2, 2020

Dear Hope Family,

I wanted to touch base as we reach the midpoint of this week to let you know about some opportunities that are coming up and to continue to let you know about ongoing ways that we would like to serve you.

As we’ve been working our way through the Psalms with brief devotions during the 8 a.m. zoom call I’ve been struck by how many times our Lord is portrayed as our refuge. It is repeated again and again. This tells us at least a couple of things- we need to hear this good news about our God over and over and that in this life we will often find ourselves in need of a refuge. He is our refuge today and every day.

The elders of the church gathered for several hours (by zoom) on Sunday night and prayed for you and talked about ways that we can try to serve and love you and our community. I hope you know that you are loved and prayed for by your elders and that we really do want to hear from you if there are things that we can pray for or needs that we can seek to meet.

Here are some things that we wanted you to know about:

Invite a Friend to Christianity Explored
We have offered the Christianity Explored class a number of times over the years and we are going to now try it over Zoom with the hope of reaching some who might not normally be interested in Christ but who may now be because of current circumstances. If you have a friend or family member who is not a Christian you could invite them to the course and it typically works best if you attend with them. We are planning to start next Tuesday, the 7th at 7 p.m. You can email me directly or send them this link.

Here are a few details: Christianity Explored is an informal and relaxed seven-week course. It’s for anyone who wants to think about the meaning of life. First Sunday – this week at 5 p.m.
We will have our First Sunday gather this week at 5 p.m. over zoom. We will sing and have the opportunity to pray together. I hope that you will plan to join us. If you would like to join the Zoom meeting, email Hope.

Holy Week Services
Next week as we celebrate Holy Week together we will have 2 additional services. We will have our Maundy Thursday Service at 7 p.m. and our Good Friday Service also at 7 p.m. We will provide a livestream for both of those services. You can read more about Holy Week services at hopefellowshipchurch.org/holy-week

Pray about Easter Invitations
Unfortunately this year we aren’t able to invite friends, co-workers and neighbors who aren’t Christians to join us in person for our gatherings on Easter. However, we can invite them to join us for the stream. I hope you’ll be praying now about who you might invite and how you could share the information on your various social media streams.

Virtual Book Discussion
One of the ways that we can stay connected in an enjoyable way during this time is through a Hope Fellowship Virtual Book Club. You’re invited to join others from Hope to read a work of fiction together and discuss via Zoom. If you’re interested in being part of a reading group, email Zach Barton. Details and times will be decided soon!

MARCH 18, 2020

Dear Hope Fellowship Family,

Our elders and staff have continued following the situation, as I’m sure you have, and I wanted to give you some updates on our current plans. We desire to care well for neighbors and especially those who are the most vulnerable and we want to respect the government authorities as they seek to address this ever-changing situation.

As of now, in light of the recommendations from the President that there not be gatherings of more than 10 people for 15 days, we will not have our regular Sunday gatherings on 3/22 or 3/29 and the current guidelines from the state that prohibit gatherings of 25 or more would prevent us from gathering through April 5th. All of these guidelines may change in the coming days but our current plan is based upon them.

Sunday Gatherings
We will not have our regular Sunday morning gatherings at least through 4/5 but will be providing a stream of the service that we urge you to join by going to the church website: www.hopefellowshipchurch.org

Community Groups
For at least this week and next none of our groups will meet in person out of respect for the guideline of 10 or less people. We do encourage groups to touch base as they are able which may vary from group to group. Most groups will likely try to connect at the usual time using an online tool to at least touch base and pray together and some may choose to walk through the study together as well. Each Community Group leader will be in touch with specifically how that group will connect.

Children’s Ministry
We are working on providing some resources as an aid to parents as you seek to invest in your children during this time.

Drop-In Ministry
This important ministry that seeks to care for those who are struggling with homelessness is continuing in a modified form during this time. If you would like to volunteer please email.

Additional Opportunities to Connect and Pray
We also want to try to provide some additional opportunities for any and all of us to connect during these days that can be isolating and overwhelming so the elders are going to provide 3 times during each weekday when you can join for a few minutes. Each weekday morning this week starting tomorrow we will have a few minutes at 8 a.m. when there will be a 5-minute devotion and a few minutes to pray. We will also have some time at 12:15 p.m. and 8 p.m. when you can join to connect with others and to pray together. You are welcome to join one of these or all of them. You can connect through the computer or by calling in using the information below:

Morning Connection and Prayer Weekdays at 8 a.m.-
A brief devotion (5 minutes) and a time to pray.

Lunchtime Connection and Prayer- Weekdays at 12:15 p.m.

Evening Connection and Prayer- Weeknights at 8 p.m.

The staff is working on some ways that we may be able to serve our neighbors and communities and hope to have some opportunities for some to potentially serve and give soon.

As I mentioned in the last update, we do live in this challenging time that can feel overwhelming to us and yet we don’t have to live driven by fear. We are a people marked by hope and assurance because of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I hope you are able to let the words of Romans 8.31-39 echo in your mind and heart this week and in the days ahead:`

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.  Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Let us Help You

We realize that this is a very tumultuous and difficult time that can lead to a variety of levels of anxiety and fears. Our elders would love to care for you. We would be very glad to arrange a phone call to talk and pray with you. Feel free to contact an elder directly or email.

We also know that some of you will be significantly impacted economically during this time. We would like to help meet your needs in this area and have funds available to do that. MARCH 13, 2020
Dear Hope Fellowship Family,

Our elders and staff have been following the situation around COVID-19 this week and consulting with several who have experience and expertise in public health as well as following the information provided by the CDC and the statements from Governor Charlie Baker. We have made the decision that we will not have our regular weekly gatherings this Sunday, March 15 at 9 & 11 a.m. We are instead going to provide a live-stream of our service.

As Christians, we have the ability to live wisely and well in the midst of the suffering and difficulties that mark our world as we have been seeing in Romans 8 for the last few weeks. We aren’t to be driven by fear but we also want to live with wisdom as well as a desire to care for and love our neighbors. At this time, we feel that our love for neighbor and respect for the government leaders who are in authority over us leads us to join the efforts that are being made to slow the spread of this virus and hopefully see the curve flattened of this pandemic. We aren’t making decisions primarily out of our fear of sickness or even death for ourselves because we have a greater hope in Christ but we are making decisions because we think that we should join the response that our society is engaging to try to protect the vulnerable in our midst and to limit the likelihood of a sudden spike in cases that would overwhelm our healthcare system.

We have currently made a decision only for this Sunday, the 15th and we will continue to address this each week as appropriate and update you.

Here is some information in a few areas:

Livestream of our Sunday Service
We will provide a live-stream of our service on Sunday at 9 a.m. and it will also be available at 11 a.m.  You will be able to find the link by going towww.hopefellowshipchurch.org The service this Sunday will involve a few songs and a sermon from Romans 8.31-39. I do hope that you will be able to join us as we come to the climax of Romans 8 and in the providence of God, we find ourselves treasuring these powerful words in a time of real challenge. If you would like to gather with a few others to watch the service and you feel well and are symptom-free then we encourage you to do that.

Drop-In Ministry
As you know we have a weekly ministry that seeks to care for those in our city who are struggling with homelessness. The team of leaders is working on plans now of how to proceed wisely with this ministry. They will be exercising much care for the volunteers and those who come to be served. If you would like to volunteer in this ministry during this time please email, office@hopefellowshipchurch.org

Other Sunday Activities are Canceled
All other Sunday activities are canceled for this week.

Community Groups
Our current plan for Community Groups is to give the leaders and hosts the freedom to make decisions on what they would like to do with the options being: continue to meet as usual, moving the group to meet at the church facility, meeting using one of the technological tools that we have or canceling. We are communicating directly with the leaders.

Pray
There are several groups of people that we can be praying for:

  • Pray for those who have been affected by this virus and for those who have lost loved ones and friends.

  • Pray for the many medical providers who are working so diligently that God would give them wisdom and discernment.

  • Pray for all leaders at all levels throughout the world that they would have wisdom in the many decisions that they need to make each day during this time.

  • Pray for those who are losing jobs or at the very least are losing some of their income.

  • Pray for those who are vulnerable in our congregation and city.

  • Pray for those who are weighed down by worry during this time.

If you would to give online as a one time action or in a recurring way you can do that atwww.hopefellowshipchurch.org/give

Care for One Another
During this time when we have limited contact with one another, it is even more important to try to stay connected in other ways. We encourage you to stay connected by phone, text, email and to check in on one another this week.

During this time, let’s look to Jesus Christ, our King with hope, casting our cares on Him and trusting that He is at work right now in our lives in the world. Let’s also seek to care for one another as we are able and let’s point those around us to Christ. Many people around us don’t know Christ and are worried and looking for a source of hope. Let’s also pray for those who are in authority in our cities, our commonwealth, and the nation that they would have wisdom in this challenging time.

Please do reach out if you have questions or for any other reason.

I’m thankful for you and praying for you,

Curtis
